PANTHER HOLLOW NICKNAMES

Many men in Panther Hollow were referred to only by their nicknames, rather than by their given names. Sometimes the neighborhood wouldn’t even know a man’s given name until reading it in his obituary notice. Most first names, and some last names, were often “Americanized.” Occasionally a person had two nicknames, one given by the family and another by friends, and individuals with the same nickname were usually from different generations. Women generally did not have nicknames. However, because Mary was a popular name, some were referred to by their own first name and their husband’s first name, such as “Mary George,” or by their first name and their husband’s nickname, such as “Mary Nuchy.”

Below are the nicknames of some of the men from Panther Hollow. For your convenience, there is also a list of nicknames and their corresponding family names. Send your correspondence to carlinog@hotmail.com if you have nicknames you would like to add to the list.
